The swamp got its name from the Mikasuki word which means “bubbling water” or “trembling earth” because of its spongy bayou. The beginnings of Okefenokee Swamp can be traced way back 6,500 years ago. Who knew that the buildup of partially decayed vegetation matter in a low depression on the tip of an old Atlantic coastal terrace will result to a natural wonder?

Around 400,000 people go to the swamp every year and few of them are locals. Most of these visitors come from the other side of the world such as Japan, China, Germany, France, and Mexico. Tours are done through motorboat, canoe, or kayak.

One of the reasons why Okefenokee Swamp is literally swamped with tourists is its varied wildlife. Bitterns, cranes, egrets, herons, and ibises can be seen all over the area. Bird watching has never been easy in this destination.
